The Transformation

HBC has fully signed off the building compliance process on the refurbishment and extension to Hertford Theatre now called BEAM.

The theatre will become a thriving hub for arts and culture as a result of the £24 million Growth And Legacy Development. Award-winning Hertfordshire-based national contractor GPF Lewis will be took forward the works appointed by East Herts Council.

The improvement works will ensure that BEAM Hertford Theatre can meet demand and will sustainably stand the test of time. The design carefully considers the theatre’s sensitive setting and makes the most of its location. The surrounding area will be improved as a result of the development, with better links to Hertford Castle and improved provision for walking and cycling.

The new centre includes:

  • Three bespoke cinema screens allowing screenings of newly released films
  • Increased seating in the auditorium with the introduction of a circle level
  • A new studio auditorium seating 150 people
  • A relaxing and open public plaza-style foyer
  • Uncovering the 12th-century motte at the back of the theatre which people can reach directly from The Wash, via a new boardwalk, creating an exciting link between the theatre, Castle Grounds, and the castle
  • An improved riverside café-bar for both theatre visitors and people enjoying the park
  • Improved access to all areas of the building so that artists can better reach the stage, backstage, and the dressing rooms.

Cllr Ben Crystall, Leader of East Herts District Council, said

It’s tremendous to see so many of the council’s partners attend the opening of BEAM, a venue which promises to serve our district community for generations to come. Much effort has been made by each party involved in the delivery of BEAM. As such, the facilities, the programme, and the new team working to invigorate this iconic venue certainly deserve the spotlight
