The Hide Exterior

The Hide, Castle Hill, Berkhamsted Transformed!

This old bungalow, dilapidated and outdated, was in dire need of a transformation to be brought up-to-date with modern living and to blend in with the rest of the neighbourhood. The old structure was demolished, clearing the way for an ambitious project that promised to breathe new life into the plot. The result of this endeavour has been nothing short of remarkable, as the bungalow has been transformed into an outstanding architectural project.

One of the most remarkable features of this revitalized bungalow is the clever utilization of the natural landscape. Built into the hillside, the living space offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The design capitalizes on this unique aspect, ensuring that every room is perfectly positioned to maximize the beauty of the surroundings. It is a harmonious blend of architecture and nature!

Building this project into a hill posed several design challenges. Designing the walkway became complex due to the uneven terrain and varying elevation levels. Additionally, creating an unbroken waterproof “tank” around the underground walls was crucial to prevent water infiltration and structural damage. Special attention needed to be given to waterproofing materials, drainage systems, and proper sealing techniques to maintain a dry and structurally sound environment within the building. Overcoming these design hurdles required careful planning, engineering expertise, and effective implementation to ensure the project’s success.

On the site, a significant issue arose regarding the abundance of glazing in the dwelling. To meet the required SAP calculations, meticulous measurement and planning were necessary to ensure that all the glazing complied with insulation standards and avoided any cold bridging. This meant carefully assessing the distribution of glazing to meet the quota of insulation, ensuring that no areas were left vulnerable to heat loss or cold transfer. By meticulously considering the placement and design of the glazing, the project team successfully addressed the challenge of maintaining energy efficiency while accommodating the desired ‘look’ of the new home

Throughout the construction process, there was a strong emphasis on close cooperation and attention to detail. The dedicated teams worked tirelessly to ensure that every aspect of the building met and exceeded the client’s expectations. From acquiring the necessary certifications to guaranteeing compliance with safety standards, no stone was left unturned. Their unwavering commitment to excellence ensured that the project crossed the finish line successfully and on time, leaving both the clients and the team proud of their achievement. It stands as a testament to the power of old spaces to be reborn into something truly remarkable
