HBC Goes Electric

HBC employees with electric cars

We are excited to have launched a new electric car scheme for employees as part of our continued commitment to sustainability and to seeking solutions to reduce our carbon footprint.

As the local authority building control service for Hertfordshire, we understand the importance of reducing our environmental impact. Particularly when it comes to the extensive area our surveyors cover for site visits, spanning approximately a 1,643 km²! This means we are always looking at ways we can help reduce our carbon footprint, on this front.

With the introduction of our company’s electric car scheme, our surveyors and all HBC employees have the opportunity to participate in the salary sacrifice programme to cost-effectively switch to electric vehicles. By embracing this initiative, we aim to reduce fossil fuel consumption on our site visits and commute, contributing to lowering our carbon footprint.

The introduction of electric vehicles within our company car scheme brings numerous environmental benefits. Firstly, it reduces the reliance on traditional fossil fuels, which helps combat air pollution and improve air quality in the areas our surveyors operate. By transitioning to electric vehicles, we are actively promoting the use of clean and renewable energy sources, aligning with our commitment to sustainable practices.

How does the electric car scheme work?

To keep things simple, the scheme includes a fully inclusive lease. That means there is only one payment taken from the paycheck.  Including the car lease, a 3-year warranty and 3-year servicing guarantee, and insurance. Our employees who opted into the scheme also won’t have to worry about paying road tax and any ULEZ charges.

HBC will also provide financial support towards installing a home electric charging point. Employees with electric cars can also still claim the same tax-free Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAPs) as petrol or diesel cars.

With new electric charging stations available at  Campus West Car Park – just a stone’s throw away from our office, the transition becomes even more convenient.

What do our employees have to say?

While the scheme has encountered its fair share of challenges, we are steadily progressing towards our goals. Positive feedback has been received from employees who have embraced their new EVs, and a sense of momentum is building within the program. As more of our team members make the switch, HBC is making strides towards reducing its carbon usage.

Final thoughts…

As we value environmental responsibility and affordability, company EV schemes are definitely a win-win. They not only contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also offer a cost-effective alternative to traditional vehicles. This gains importance with the government’s aim to eliminate these polluting vehicles by 2030.

There is a lot to consider when implementing an EV scheme, and our scheme hasn’t run without teething problems! However, providing our employees with this benefit whilst cutting our carbon footprint will set up HBC for a greener future.
