Project: Construction of new classroom and sheltered play area

New Classroom with Sheltered Play Area

The design brief required the erection of a new classroom with sheltered play area and playground, to accommodate Early Years pupils. Construction started on the 8th January 2016 and completion was achieved in July 2016. The client’s requirement to have the project delivered on time was met, and the school was able to furnish the new classroom and have it ready for the Autumn term. The project was also delivered on budget.

Team work was excellent throughout this development. An early good working relationship between Hertfordshire Building Control and the design team was followed by good communication on site between the Contractor and the Hertfordshire Building Control’s Surveyors. The Surveyors made regular site inspections at agreed stages in the project, which allowed for a smooth building process.

The new building has been designed to provide excellent levels natural light and ventilation. Opening windows and high level Clerestory windows provide an efficient passive cooling system to guarantee a comfortable environment for the summer period. A highly insulated building envelope and low energy lighting will allow for low energy consumption and low running cost for the school. The building, when air tested on completion had a very low air leakage: Air Pressure Test of 4.37 m3/(h.m2)@50pa with a target of 4.5.
