Extensions to two classrooms

Two Extensions, Two Different Classrooms

Situated in the village of Buntingford, this primary school development provided two extensions to two different classrooms within the school. The new buildings have made a real difference to the classroom environment at Millfield First School. The children were really proud of their spacious learning facilities, as we saw first-hand on our visit!

With a view to future running costs the timber-framed extensions were designed for enhanced; thermal performance with U-values of elements being less than the maximum required by Building Regulations. Together with the care taken to prevent air leakage this should reduce carbon emissions and make a significant long-term savings for the school.

HBC identified possible problems and hold-ups during the plan checking process, such as the undiscovered underground drainage system that became apparent. The architect and contractor with input from Hertfordshire Building Control worked together to amend the original drainage design layouts. Therefore extra works didn’t impact heavily on the schedule.

The development has provided much needed educational facilities for the benefit of the local community. The project from initial design through to actual completion of the work was very impressive. Attention to detail was outstanding and the contractors, site manager, and tradesmen took pride in their work, resulting in the high quality of finish they achieved. HBC and on-site personnel developed a good working relationship. As a result, the construction process ran very smoothly with few issues raised.
